ARE EXTENSIONS FOR YOU?
In the world of celebrity beauty -- the airbrushed cover photos, the custom- made push-up bras, the hovering makeup artists, the nicks, tucks and implants -- nothing is sacred. But some celebrity looks are easier to get than others. One of the simplest ways to achieve a red carpet look is to treat yourself to hair extensions. Extensions have become so common that if you picture a music or movie star with amazing hair, you're probably seeing at least a few extensions.
If their hair is great, extensions enhance the look, if their hair is not so great, extensions save the look.
Are hair extensions right for you?
It depends on your hair type and your level of commitment. DebsBall.ie’s favourites are extensions that attach to the hair with tiny clip-on combs.
The positives: They look the most natural and are healthiest for the hair.
The negatives: They won't last more than a night and can be pricey at first.
Clip-on hair extensions have to be custom made.
Your stylist orders human hair close to your type and dyes it to match your colour. They will then sow in the combs. Depending on the number of pieces you use, it could cost €250 or more. But after that initial expense, these extensions can be used over and over again. A girl who is great at handling hair can apply them to herself. Or you can simply schedule an appointment with your stylist to blow out your hair, allowing for time to apply the extensions.
Extensions that are glued to strands of hair, require more maintenance. It takes about three to four hours to apply them the first time, but when you come back for new extensions, it takes at least six or seven hours to take off the old extensions and apply new ones. Another downside is that they tend to hang in clusters, with separation or space between the extensions -- plus the glue can ravage the hair.
A cheaper version of the clip-on can be had if you go for synthetic or nonhuman hair extensions. Available at some beauty supply stores, they can add sex appeal or length to your look when new. But synthetic hair has a short life span. It frizzes easily and cannot be blown dry. Freshening and fixing synthetic hair usually entails a trip to a wig maker, which may be costly.
Express Extensions are now available at the Hair Extensions Studio on Upper Baggot Street, Dublin 4. Express Extensions are the extensions system of the future. They take just 40 minutes to apply and last for three months. Unlike other systems on the market, Express Extensions take only 30 minutes to remove. They are incredibly lightweight so there is no strain on your hair roots. Full Head- €495 euro.
DebsBall.ie loves hair extensions and when you use them for special occasions, they're sexier, and they never fail to boost your confidence.
